What does "as he thinks in his heart so is he" mean?
|
"For as he thinketh in his heart, so
is he..." Proverbs 23:7 I hear this part of this verse quoted all the time and I would like to say a few things about it. Proverbs is actually a conversation between Jesus and the Holy Spirit. But even if you reject that thought, lets look at Proverbs 23:6-7 in context. Proverbs 23 6 Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats: 7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee. Notice that verse 6 ends with a colon. This is why I included it because its part of the entire thought. The "he" in verse 7, the one who thinks in his heart, is the one that "has" an evil eye. Notice it said he has past tense. Because the thing that he thinks is what is already in his heart. The evil is the iniquity in his heart. Iniquity says I can have life apart from God. This verse is NOT saying whatever you can think, you become... that's just an awful lie. The actual meaning of this verse was the Holy Spirit saying to Jesus, don't eat the food (bread) that iniquity serves that only brings death. It is Jesus seeing that only His Father has the Word (bread) of eternal life. And that Jesus was actually the bread (and the Word) the Holy Spirit was talking to Him about. The bread sent down from heaven. |
